A doctors’ surgery in Wolverhampton is set to be transformed by a major building project.
The Newbridge Surgery in Tettenhall Road will triple in size, greatly improving facilities and services for patients when the work is finished by the end of the year.
Bridgnorth architects Johnson Design Partnership, who specialise in healthcare projects, have designed the ambitious three-storey scheme which will see the surgery going from three to eight consulting rooms, an extra treatment room and a much larger pharmacy being opened.
“We have obtained planning permission, funding has been secured from the NHS and Jhoots Pharmacy and we are now going out to tender, meaning that work will hopefully start in the spring and take around eight months,” said Matt Spinks of Johnson Design, which has completed over 70 similar developments.
“The extension will provide additional consulting rooms, a bigger waiting room and better facilities for out of hours and weekends services, as well as a lift to improve access to all floors,” he explained.
The project will also feature a new registrar room, midwife/health care visitor room, refurbished facilities of the existing staff space, including the kitchen and toilet, a seminar room on the second floor with conference facilities and balcony. Better storage facilities will be provided, as well as an Isolation room and new utility.
“The plan also allows for more parking, including spaces for ambulances, and better vehicular access on and off the main road. All in all it should make a huge difference to staff and patients, bringing the surgery building up to the highest standards,” Matt added.
Dr Gill Pickavance, senior partner at the surgery, commented: “Johnson Design Partnership have been extremely helpful in enabling us to understand the complexities of extending our building to NHS standards involving local IT and infection control personnel.
“Their team has been efficient in trying to push our project forward enabling us to meet timescales demanded of NHS England. We have appreciated the advice on how we manage continuing to work within a building site by supporting us with team meetings.”
Sarbjit Jhooty of Jhoots Pharmacy Group welcomed the news and added: “We have been associated with Newbridge surgery for a number of years and look forward to the expansion of our existing pharmacy at the surgery and to continuing to provide our high quality service to our existing and future new patients.”
