Two new unique and contemporary homes have now been completed along Bridgnorth’s riverside. Perched in an elevated position behind Bishop Percy’s House these innovative houses are positioned to maximise views over the river and respond to their historic location. The change in style was met with scepticism at first, however as the build developed many local residents have been won over by the informed design, which was created by Bridgnorth based Architects, Johnson Design Partnership Ltd.
A contemporary approach to the design was adopted to compliment and not undermine the existing historical context of the site. Grade 1 listed Bishop Percy’s House (which underwent a complete refurbishment while the new builds were constructed) has now opened as a tearooms and luxury holiday apartments. The combination of old and new has meant that Bishop Percy’s House can be celebrated as part of a complimentary scheme.
Johnson Design Partnership completed thorough research and historical analysis of the site before developing a design. Managing Director Vic Johnson, explained that they discovered “Trevithick manufactured steam engines on the opposite bank of the Severn and sent them down river ultimately to South America!
“Also, there was a smelting plant on the site so this, and others facts, led to us developing a marine influenced design for the homes which echoed the metallic history of the area.
“So, the new properties are steel framed buildings with copper cladding, offering two environments – one shrouded in history the other opening out onto the river,” Vic added.
The informed design reflecting the maritime and metallic heritage of the location was a planning success and the whole team is delighted with the finished result. Matt Spinks, Senior Architect and Director added “We managed to replace an asbestos ridden deteriorating old gymnasium with two luxury homes. Owners Reg and Maria Allen have saved this site from disrepair, breathing new life in to it and sharing it with the town”.
The upside-down layouts allow the first-floor open plan living areas to lead out through large bifold doors to generous balconies, facilitating the stunning uninterrupted views across the river. Each home has modern finishes throughout and are spacious, light and airy. These new distinctive homes offer luxury riverside living.
